Joe Root became the first England batsman to score three World Cup centuries during the emphatic victory over West Indies on Friday.

Root hit an unbeaten hundred as England chased the Windies 212 all out with eight wickets to spare in Southampton.

Test captain Root has been in superb form at this World Cup, also scoring a ton in the defeat to Pakistan and a fifty in the opening win over South Africa.

Root, speaking after the eight-wicket win, said: Its obviously nice for this hundred to mean something and for us to win.

It was a great toss to win and important we followed through on that. You pride yourself on working it out as a batsman, building big partnerships either when setting or closing down a chase like we did today.

It was nice to get some time in the powerplay, have the fielders up and hit the gaps.

Theres not much difference to batting at three and its so good when you have players like Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler in your order.

Then Chris Woakes played fantastic today. It was a really good team effort and performance and puts us in a good place going into the next match.

Former captain Michael Vaughan heaped praise on Root following the match, calling him England best-every consistent player.

He told BBC Test Match Special: Joe is Englands best-ever consistent player, he makes it look so easy whatever the format.

The West Indies bowled poorly, you just sit on the back foot against this team, you dont have to do a great deal with your feet.

He has three World Cup centuries, that tells you the kind of player England have. He looks driven to make sure this team go all the way. They have an incredible chance to win that trophy.
