Harry Kane admits Tottenhams start to the season has been a disappointment and he and his teammates are rapidly running out of excuses.

Hopes of building on last seasons unlikely run to the Champions League final already appear fanciful with Spurs having registered just two wins from their opening six Premier League matches.

Their miserable run of domestic form, which dates back to the tail end of last season when they came within a point of blowing their top four status, continued against League Two Colchester last night after they were subjected to an embarrassing penalty shootout defeat against League Two opposition.

Kane was left out of last nights match ahead of Saturdays crucial match against manager Mauricio Pochettinos former club Southampton.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Kane said: Id say its been disappointing, I dont think theres any hiding behind that. To only win two games out of our first seven is not the standards that weve set in previous years.

Obviously the two draws at (Manchester) City and Arsenal are not terrible results, but being 2-0 up at Arsenal and drawing does feel like a terrible result.

Weve put ourselves in good positions this season, we just havent managed to see the game out or find a way to win like we have in previous years.

Its a disappointing start, but there are plenty of games to turn that around, starting with the game on Saturday [against Southampton].

[Game management] is something we need to get better at, when we go ahead in games we need to be more confident, to see the game out, whether we drop behind the ball or carry on playing, whatever suits that game.
