Jimmy Greaves, the Tottenham and England legend, 80, is now recovering under the watchful eye of wife Irene.
Greaves was taken to hospital on April 7, but it is not believed he had not contracted coronavirus or suffered another stroke.
His son, Andy, revealed that he returned home from hospital on Tuesday night as he thanked the staff that cared for him.
He said: “Mum was delighted to welcome Dad home last night and we can’t thank the doctors and nurses, and all the NHS staff who cared for him, enough.
“He hasn’t been a well man for some time but the way he keeps fighting everything that comes at him continues to make us proud.
“As well as those who have cared for Dad in the past week, and in the past five years, we would like to thank the public for their support.”
Rock legend Phil Collins has made a “substantial donation” to help the ex-Chelsea, West Ham and Spurs striker in his battle against illness.
Greaves has struggled with health problems since he suffered a stroke nearly five years ago.
He now uses a wheelchair and is cared for around the clock by family and carers that visit him several times per day.
The 80-year-old hung up his boots almost 49 years ago, but still holds the record of most goals in the English top flight with 357.
Greaves also still has the top spot for Tottenham after scoring a record 266 goals in 379 appearances.
The legendary forward also bagged 44 goals in 57 games for England and was part of the 1966 World Cup winning squad.
