F1 confirm TWO races at Silverstone as new 2020 calendar is released

F1 have confirmed Silverstone will host two races this summer in a revised 2020 calendar.

Silverstone will host two F1 races this summer as motorsport’s premier competition released its restructured opening eight races of the campaign. The first race in England will take place over the weekend July 31 to August 2 and will be called the British Grand Prix.

A second Silverstone race will then follow over August 7-9 and will be labelled the Emirates Formula 1 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

The 2020 season was postponed on the eve of the opener in Melbourne because of the coronavirus.

Lockdown restrictions in many nations have been eased so the season will get underway in July.

Austria will host first race of campaign on July 5 with the second round taking place at the same venue a week later.

Teams then head to Hungary for a third race on July 19 – which was originally pencilled in to be the British Grand Prix.

After three consecutive race weeks teams are given a week off before the double-header at Silverstone.

There is no slowing down from there as it is straight to Barcelona for round six on August 16.

The Belgian Grand Prix and Italian Grand Prix complete the initial schedule on August 30 and September 6 respectively.

F1 bosses hope to have a total of 15 to 18 races this year and they want to season completed in December.

Chase Carey, Chairman and CEO of Formula 1, said: “In the past weeks we have been working tirelessly with all our partners, the FIA and the teams to create a revised opening 2020 calendar allowing us to restart racing in the safest possible way.

“We are pleased to be able to set out our opening eight race calendar today and look forward to publishing our full calendar in the coming weeks.

“I want to thank every promoter and partner for their support and ongoing commitment to Formula 1.

“While we currently expect the season to commence without fans at our races we hope that over the coming months the situation will allow us to welcome them back once it is safe to do, but we know the return of Formula 1 will be a welcome boost to sports fans around the world.”

Lewis Hamilton is the favourite to win the Championship this year and draw level with Michael Schumacher’s record.
