Poland is ready to make all MiG-29 fighter jets available to the US

Poland is prepared to put all its MiG-29 fighter jets at the disposal of the US, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday, amid a high-stakes debate over how to support Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion of its territory.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed for Nato states to provide his country with planes to bolster its capabilities and US officials have been discussing providing Poland with F-16s in exchange if it did so.

However, Poland has expressed reservations about taking any steps that could drag their country into the war. But the foreign ministry said that Warsaw was prepared to send its MiG-29 jets to the Ramstein airbase in Germany “immediately and free of charge” and put them at the disposal of the US government.

Russia announces ceasefire for Wednesday morning

Moscow has announced a humanitarian ceasefire in Ukraine for Wednesday morning to carry out the evacuation of civilians from five cities, Russian news agencies reported.

“From 10:00 MSK (0700 GMT) on March 9, 2022, the Russian Federation is declaring a ‘regime of silence’, and is ready to provide humanitarian corridors,” TASS news agency said, quoting a department of the Russian defense ministry charged with humanitarian operations in Ukraine. It added that Russia proposes to agree on the routes and start time of the humanitarian corridors with Ukraine “before 03:00 MSK on March 9”.Ukrainian officials say civilians are already being evacuated from the besieged areas of Irpin, near the capital, Kyiv, and northeastern Sumy. However, evacuations especially from the city of Mariupol, have failed on several occasions in recent days, with both Kyiv and Moscow blaming the other side for the failures.

China calls for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, urges ‘maximum restraint’

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for “maximum restraint” in Ukraine and said China is “pained to see the flames of war reignited in Europe,” state media reported, in his strongest statement to date on the conflict. Xi, speaking at a virtual meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, said the three countries should jointly support peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported. Xi described the situation in Ukraine as “worrying” and said the priority should be preventing it from escalating or “spinning out of control,” CCTV cited him as saying.
