LONDON (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Despite the UK’s reputation as having some of the worst beaches in Europe, there are a number of places that deserve a visit. The Northumberland Coast has miles of sandy beaches, a high density of castles, and some of the most picturesque places in the country. For example, ‘The Couple’ by Scottish sculptor Sean Henry is a beautiful example of coastal art. Visiting Alnwick, or the Farne Islands, is a must, as are the historic towns of Dundee and Durham.
St Michael’s Mount
You may think that the UK doesn’t have any stunning locations, but there are plenty of hidden gems. Whether you’re looking for a stunning location in the south or exploring ancient sites, you can find them in the UK. From Cornwall to Scotland, there are many places you won’t believe exist in this country.
The island of St Michael’s Mount has a fascinating history. The island was home to the Archangel Michael, and became a place of pilgrimage and worship. The island was formerly owned by the owners of Mont St Michel Abbey. Eventually, the castle was restored and is now a National Trust property. You can visit the island on any day, except Christmas and Sunday, and get a glimpse of medieval life.
Porthcurno Beach
If you like solitude and are not interested in crowds, you should try one of the UK’s secluded beaches. If you are a beach bum, you may not like the idea of a crowded beach, but the calm waters, rugged cliffs, and spectacular stretches of sea will be more than enough to satisfy your desires.
The Outer Hebrides are an amazing collection of islands, interconnected with a dramatic coastline. They offer a secluded stay, a chance to take a walk on the cliffs, and a taste of Scottish life. You can visit the Isle of St Kilda and observe the thousands of nesting seabirds. Visit the most northeastern tip of the British mainland, Duncansby Head, and hike along the coastline. Don’t forget to check out the impressive Duncansby Stacks, which are a striking natural formation of cliffs and a dramatic landscape.
Porthmeor
If you’re a lover of long seaside walks, you should try Bamburgh Beach, a rugged stretch of coastline about 20 miles south of the Scottish border. The beach is backed by a quaint row of beach huts and you can also take a boat trip to see dolphins. While you’re there, don’t miss a tour of Bamburgh Castle, which tells thrilling tales about the Viking invasion and Scottish rebellion.
From secluded beaches, you’ll find many other attractions and activities. In the United Kingdom, there are plenty of beautiful areas to see. In Scotland, Cairngorm Mountain is an iconic destination. At the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, you can go on hikes to see the reindeer. Snowden, Great Britain’s highest peak, is also worth a trip. There’s a waterfall and stargazing opportunities, too!
Llyn Peninsula
This summer you may be locked up in Britain, the UK has more than enough to keep you entertained for weeks. From isolated beaches to world-famous cities, the UK offers an amazing diversity of places to visit.
The Lizard Peninsula is a popular spot during summer. The white sands and cool water make this a wonderful place to swim and enjoy the scenery. There’s even a National Trust property nearby. Be prepared for some crowded summer weekends though. You’ll want to reserve your car if you plan to spend a day on the beach, as this location tends to become crowded during the summer.
