A Russian military court has sentenced Vladlen Menshikov, 29, to 14 years in prison after finding him guilty of cooperating with a foreign state and “justifying terrorism,” according to Russian media reports on Monday.
Initially, Menshikov was accused of attempting to sabotage railway lines transporting military equipment near his hometown of Rezh, close to Yekaterinburg in the Ural region. However, the charge was later dropped, and he was convicted on the other two counts, Vecherniye Vedomosti reported.
The court documents revealed that Menshikov allegedly received instructions from the Freedom of Russia Legion, a Ukrainian-based paramilitary group opposed to President Vladimir Putin. The group has taken responsibility for several cross-border attacks into Russia.
Menshikov was arrested by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in September 2022 at St. Petersburg airport while attempting to board a flight to Belarus.
