Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism that the war with Russia could end sooner than expected. Speaking to ABC News, Zelensky stated, “I think that we are closer to peace than we think,” adding that Ukraine could push Russian President Vladimir Putin toward ending the conflict, but only if Ukraine maintains a strong military position.

Zelensky’s remarks come as he travels to the United States to speak at the United Nations General Assembly and present a “victory plan” to Western allies, including US President Joe Biden. His plan focuses on securing additional weapons, diplomatic pressure on Russia, and holding Moscow accountable for the 2022 full-scale invasion.

Despite the optimism, the war in Ukraine continues to rage, with Russian attacks hitting cities like Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky reiterated his plea for long-range missiles to strike deep into Russia, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded that Russia would only end the war when its goals are achieved.

Zelensky’s push for Western military aid is essential, as Ukrainian forces face increasing pressure in Donbas, where Russian advances threaten key cities. Ukrainian military experts are cautioning citizens to prepare for possible losses in the region.

As the conflict continues, Zelensky’s visit is critical to securing the support needed to fortify Ukraine’s defense and shape a potential diplomatic resolution.
