October marks the celebration of Black History Month, a time to acknowledge and honour the significant contributions of Black individuals to history and society. This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Narratives,” emphasizes the importance of highlighting the diverse stories and histories within Manchester’s Black community.
The University of Manchester invites everyone to participate in a range of events throughout the month. Activities include discussions, art exhibitions, and workshops designed to educate and inspire, reflecting the vital role Black culture plays in our shared history.
What Black History Month Means to Students
Students at the university have shared their perspectives on the importance of Black History Month and the pioneers they admire. Notably, Landry, President of the African Caribbean Medical Society, highlighted the month as a moment to reflect on achievements and challenges faced by the community.
Exciting Events Throughout October
- Reimagining Black History Month: Join discussions with Gary Younge and youth leaders on the future of Black History Month at Manchester Central Library on October 2.
- Barbara Walker Exhibition: Experience over 70 works by artist Barbara Walker at The Whitworth Art Gallery starting October 3.
- Brunch and Learn: Attend a session on data representation in Black and Mixed heritage communities on October 9.
- Film Screening and Discussions: Participate in community conversations about climate justice and the Black experience throughout the month at various locations, including the Manchester Museum.
These events provide opportunities for community engagement and learning, allowing everyone to contribute to a richer understanding of Black histories and cultures.
