Barnet (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Drivers in Barnet are advised to plan ahead as eight road closures are scheduled this week on the National Highways network near the area.

Additionally, one of them is anticipated to result in delays of ten to thirty minutes.

According to National Highways’ most recent expected works list, eight closures are scheduled to begin within the next two weeks:

M1 northbound, junction 2 to junction 3, lane closures for barrier works, minor delays (less than 10 minutes) from 10 p.m. on August 11 to 5.30 a.m. on August 14.

A1 northbound, junction Five Ways Corner to M1 northbound, junction 2, Lane and link road closure for maintenance work, diversion via Local Authorities network

A1 northbound, August 11 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. August 14: considerable delays (10-30 minutes).

There will be minor (less than ten minutes) delays on the A1 northbound from 10 p.m. on August 11 to 5 a.m. on August 12 due to lane closure for urgent safety fence repairs at the intersection of Rowley Lane and Bignells Corner.

M1 southbound, junction 4 to junction 3, lane closure for CCTV work, moderate delays (less than 10 minutes) from 10 p.m. on August 12 to 5.30 a.m. on August 14.

M1 northbound, junction 2 to junction 3, lane closures for CCTV work from 10 p.m. on August 18 to 5.30 a.m. on August 20: minor delays (less than 10 minutes).

There will be minor (less than ten-minute) delays on the A1 southbound from 10 p.m. on August 18 to 6 a.m. on September 13 due to lane closures for culvert work and the intersection of Bignells Corner and Rowley Lane.

M1 northbound, junction 2 to junction 3, minor delays (less than 10 minutes) from 10 p.m. on August 20 to 5.30 a.m. on August 22 closing of lanes for CCTV operations.

Smaller road closures in Barnet won’t be part of National Highways’ agenda because they are in charge of maintaining major A-roads and motorways.

How might these closures affect daily commutes in Barnet?

Closures cause detours and reduced lane availability, leading to congestion on alternative routes and longer overall journey times. Motorists will face delays especially during peak hours when traffic volumes are highest.

Traffic diverted from closed sections will increase congestion on local streets and secondary roads, potentially causing bottlenecks and slowdowns in residential and commercial areas.

Commuters may experience uncertainty in travel times due to changing closure schedules and varying congestion levels, making it harder to plan trips and risking lateness for work or appointments.
