Hounslow (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Hounslow Council will double its Extra Care housing, starting with a 50-apartment development at Nene Gardens in Hanworth to support older residents.
While living freely in your own self-contained apartment, Extra Care housing gives you access to assistance with daily activities including dressing, taking your medicine, washing, and personal care.
This kind of service has become a well-liked and affordable substitute for more conventional Adult Social Care offerings like home care packages, assisted living, and residential care.
Greenrod Place (Brentford), Bristol Court (Feltham), Park Lodge (Hounslow), and Bridgewater House in Isleworth are the borough’s four current Extra Care initiatives, which the new apartments will supplement.
Councillor Lily Bath, the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health, and Integration on Hounslow Council, and Councillor Tom Bruce, the Deputy Leader, issued the following joint statement:
“This is important, inclusive growth for the borough. New Extra Care facilities in Hounslow will boost provision from just over 200 units currently to over 400 in the coming years. There is a growing cohort of residents ready and eligible for schemes that reduce needs from escalating and delay hospital admissions through effective integration between local health and social care.”
Olwyn Inskip, whose husband Joseph is a resident at Greenrod Place, spoke highly of the service:
“When my husband became ill, the on-site team at Greenrod Place acted very swiftly, and organised an ambulance, while keeping me informed so I could get to the hospital quickly. Extra Care facilities offer exactly that, and it’s a great comfort to know loved ones can rely on such professional support, so quickly, from community social workers to on-site care staff. It’s also a facility where he can maintain his independence and not feel isolated while knowing support is available as and when he needs it.”
How will the new 50-unit Nene Gardens scheme change Extra Care capacity in Hounslow?
Double the available Extra Care units in the borough, increasing supply from just over 200 to over 400 units when all planned developments are complete. Assist in reducing the number of out of borough residential placements by providing more local supported housing options for people who have care needs.
Maximise the use of underused council-owned land, more efficiently using existing assets to meet demand for integrated, independent living with care. Support the Council’s wider strategy to encourage independent living, reduce the escalation of care needs, and relieve pressure on established adult social care and residential care provision.
The Nene Gardens scheme is a critical part of Hounslow’s plan to significantly expand supported housing locally, improving care outcomes and community integration for vulnerable residents.
