Lambeth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Lambeth Council has launched a six-week consultation on creating a Brixton Neighbourhood Forum, giving residents more influence over planning and development.

This entails establishing priorities, forming policies, and assisting in directing future development in a manner that takes into account the requirements of the community.

Following the six-week consultation, which will run from Monday, September 8, to Friday, October 24, 2025, the Lambeth council will decide whether to amend the current Tulse Hill and Herne Hill designated neighbourhood areas, which overlap with the proposed area covered by the forum.

After receiving a formal application on April 16, 2025, the next step in the decision-making process is the consultation.

Planning authorities must take into account whether an organization’s membership is recruited from various locations within the neighborhood and from various facets of the community when deciding whether to designate it as a neighborhood forum.

The goal of the neighborhood forum ought to be in line with the local character.

The council’s consultation webpage now has more information.

After consultation, council officers will evaluate all of the submissions before deciding whether to approve the proposal. After the application is made public, the council has 13 weeks to make a decision.

What criteria will Lambeth use to assess the Forum’s membership diversity?

The forum’s membership should reflect the diversity of the proposed area, including the different neighbourhoods, demographic groups, community interests, and community identities, to ensure there are no barriers to membership.

Diversity in the membership should encompass a variety of protected characteristics under the Equalities Act (i.e. age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, and pregnancy/maternity, marriage/civil partnership).

Given the diversity of Lambeth’s ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic background (including a significant Black, Asian and Multi-Ethnic population and a large LGBTQ+ community) the forum should have a similar range of diversity in its membership.
