Hackney (Parliament Politics Magazine) – The Fox pub in Hackney is reopening seven years after a failed flat conversion left the building abandoned and branded an ‘eyesore’ by residents.
Following a protracted restoration and cleanup effort, the Fox in Dalston has welcomed its first patrons since June 2018.
The Wellington Pub Company had previously advertised that the Hackney establishment on Kingsland Road needed “fit-out and investment” on a 20-year, free-of-tie lease.
According to reports, the job will be taken up by the crew of Hoxton favorite Howl at the Moon, and they already have ambitious ideas.
A launch party will take place on Saturday, September 27, followed by a line-up of weekly events, gigs and live sports. Confirming the good news on Instagram, the pub owners said:
“Thanks to everyone who came to The Fox this weekend — half construction site, half pub, but full on good vibes.
And massive thanks to everyone who’s helped us get The Fox back on its feet — builders, suppliers, friends, family, and locals. We couldn’t have done it without you.”
The Fox was a well-liked location with a beer vending machine, photo booth, and roof terrace prior to this most recent renovation. Later, when the freeholder intended to convert the top floor into apartments, it was boarded up and closed.
The ground floor, however, was never sold, and the bar was allowed to gradually decay. For a long time, the famous frontage was more well-known for its graffiti and hoardings than for its distinguished history.
The building’s exterior has been painted a dark green, giving it a fresh lease on life. According to social media, bartenders will be pouring gluten-free beer, while other specifics are currently being kept under wraps.
The Macbeth on Hoxton Street is also being revitalized this summer, adding to the recent success of Hackney’s hospitality scene.
What changes were made during the restoration and interiors?
The inside has been completely revamped to create a blend of a traditional pub ambiance, along with every convenience available in a modern setting. Most architectural original features have been preserved, and the establishment decorated in a tasteful contemporary style.
New gathering and seating areas, along with a new light plan, provide improved comfort and atmosphere for staff and patrons, making a more welcoming environment. The bar area was updated to include modern fittings, while still retaining the feel of a traditional British pub.
Kitchen facilities were enhanced to facilitate an expanded food offering, and walls and ceilings have been repaired and redecorated to compliment the warm colors, and the art that evokes the heritage of this pub and the local culture.
