During a press briefing, when asked if NATO should shoot down Russian jets, Donald Trump replied, “Yes, I do.”
He said US support for NATO allies would vary depending on the situation, while praising their spending power on weapons supplied to Ukraine.
Mr Trump added,
“NATO stepped up, you know, when they went from 2% to 5%. That was great unity. It’s a lot of weapons they’re buying, and they’re buying them from us. They’re buying them from the US.”

President Trump praised Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, describing him as “a great man” and saying he is “putting up one hell of a fight.”
He said,
“We have great respect for the fight Ukraine is putting up, it’s pretty amazing actually.”
Mr Trump invited Mr Zelenskyy to discuss battlefield successes, asking, “Would you like to say how you are doing on the battlefield?”
The president added he hopes to discuss security support for Ukraine but declined to give details, calling it “too early” to comment.
