Richmond Upon Thames (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Richmond borough’s population has grown slightly over the past year, according to new estimates released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Between the middle of 2023 and the middle of 2024, the population of Richmond upon Thames, which includes Teddington, grew by 0.31%.
As a result, the estimated population has increased to 196,678 from 196,061 the year before.
While certain inner London boroughs, such Lambeth and Kensington & Chelsea, showed minor losses, this reflects a trend of progressive increase in outside London districts.
All 362 local authorities in the UK are included in the estimations; 342 of them are experiencing population growth, while 18 are experiencing population declines.
The Isles of Scilly experienced the sharpest decline, at -2.75%, while the City of London witnessed the biggest increase, at 11.06%.
These two regions do, however, produce outlier results because of their extremely small populations.
What caused the recent population increase in Richmond upon Thames?
Richmond ranks second for natural population change in London, which means there are significantly more births than deaths to overall growth.
While overall international migration into Richmond has decreased, the borough is still benefiting from net international migration, largely associated with working-age adults from European countries such as Italy, Romania, Spain, and Turkey.
The population is getting older with increases in residents aged 50 to 64 and above, while the younger adult group (25 to 34 years) has seen a decrease in share.
