What did Zohran Mamdani say in his historic victory speech?
In his winning speech, Zohran Mamdani said,
“The sun may have set over city this evening but as Eugene Debbs once said, ‘I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity.’”
He stated,
“For as long as we can remember the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that the power does not belong in their hands… and yet over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater.”
Referring to his defeat of Andrew Cuomo, Mr Mamdani said, “Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.”
He added,
“I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the last time I utter his name.”
The newly elected mayor thanked, saying,
“Thank you to the next generation of New Yorkers who refused to accept that the promise of a better future was a relic of the past.”
He continued,
“You showed that when politics speaks to you without condescension, we can usher in a new era of leadership.”
The Democrat slammed rising rents, citing a Pennsylvania commuter, and made cost-of-living issues a major focus of his campaign.
Mr Mamdani said,
“Because of you we will make this city one that working people can love and live in again.”
He said politics
“is not something done to us. Now it is something that we do. Tonight we have have stepped out from the old into the new. So let us speak now with clarity and conviction that cannot be misunderstood.”
Mr Mamdani continued,
“This will be an age where New Yorkers expect from their leaders a bold vision of what we will achieve rather than a list of excuses.”
What did Zohran Mamdani say about Donald Trump in his victory speech?
Zohran Mamdani said,
“We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve and no concern too small for it to care about.”
He stated,
“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” the Democrat continues. If there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power.”
Mr Mamdani added,
“So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.”
The Democrat told supporters,
“Hear me, President Trump: to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
Mr Mamdani said,
“The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate,”
highlighting that he is young, Muslim, a Democratic socialist, and unapologetic about it.
How did White House respond to Zohran Mamdani’s voter fraud claims?
Zohran Mamdani alleged that US President Donald Trump aimed to intimidate voters, prompting the White House to call his remarks “irresponsible.”
In response to Mr Mamdani’s comments, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said,
“I think they are completely irresponsible and they are based on zero evidence, and I think this is just another example of how the Democrat Party unfortunately stands for nothing.”
She added,
“All they stand against is President Donald Trump, and I think it’s quite sad to see that we have someone at the top of the ticket on an election day today saying such things about the President.”
How are mayoral elections held in New York?
The New York City mayoral election is held every four years after a presidential election year, with the winner taking office at the beginning of the next year.
The primary elections use ranked-choice voting, where voters rank candidates by preference. If no candidate receives more than 50% of first-choice votes, the lowest-ranking candidates are eliminated in rounds, redistributing votes until one candidate surpasses 50%.
