Sutton (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Chafik Aziz, from Sutton’s Wallington area, has been charged with terrorism offences linked to the Islamic State, authorities confirmed this week.
The Metropolitan Police charged 18-year-old Chafik Aziz on November 11 with “an offence contrary to section 5 (1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006.”
According to Aziz’s allegations, “he engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention, namely attempting to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State, between 1 July, 2025 and 5 November, 2025 with the intention of committing acts of terrorism.”
Following the Western invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, the jihadist organization Islamic State has expanded. Large areas of Syria and Iraq were taken over by it in 2014, and it soon gained notoriety for its cruelty, which included mass murders, kidnappings, and beheadings.
In the case of Aziz, the Met issued a statement which said,
“Officers arrested an 18-year-old man on Tuesday, November 4, at Gatwick Airport. He was initially arrested on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation and detained in police custody under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
However, he was re-arrested and detained the following day under Section 41 Terrorism Act 2000. On Thursday, November 6, officers obtained a warrant of further detention at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which meant the 18-year-old could be kept in police custody until November 11.
After carrying out further enquiries and following liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service, the above charges were authorised against Aziz on November 11.”
Aziz was scheduled to appear at Sutton’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.
How are local authorities supporting affected Wallington communities?
Authorities and community associations in the Wallington area of Sutton are supporting affected communities through a range of good and integrated neighborhood enterprises. One crucial illustration is the charity Wallington Community Wellbeing, which offers support for insulation, internal health, fiscal pressures, and other social issues currently in the area. This charity works nearly with Sutton’s intertwined neighborhood brigades, which include GPs, councillors, and voluntary sector leaders.
Community good events, similar as one held on the Roundshaw Estate, bring together multiple NHS and good associations to offer health checks, vaccinations, fitness advice, fiscal support, and internal health coffers directly within original neighborhoods.
Also, authority panels involving councillors and community representatives engage residents in shaping programs and advancements for areas including Wallington, icing their voices are heard in planning and service provision.
