Croydon (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Two Croydon schools are among 250 selected for new solar panel installations under a Great British Energy scheme aimed at boosting clean energy in education.
As each school in the program saves thousands on its energy bills, the government’s and Great British Energy’s support should allow millions of pounds from school budgets to be directed toward books and teaching supplies.
The national plan now includes Harris City Academy Crystal Palace and Harris Primary Academy Benson on West Way, Shirley. The Labour MP for Croydon East, which contains the primary, Natasha Irons, called the move “a fantastic investment.”
The £100 million initiative is the first significant project for the publicly owned energy firm of the Labour government, which is also financing solar panels and other energy-saving measures for military installations and NHS locations.
Schools that have already installed solar panels are reusing the fuel savings from using clean, domestic power in the classroom.
According to a multi-departmental announcement from Whitehall,
“This is part of the government’s drive to make all public buildings more climate resilient.
Rocketing energy bills have eaten into school budgets in recent years. This has been driven by the UK’s dependency on global fossil fuel markets over which government has no control.
By enabling schools to generate their own electricity, it is estimated schools will save millions, far more than installation costs.”
MP Irons said:
“This fantastic investment by Great British Energy in Harris Primary Academy Benson will mean less money spent on energy bills and more resources being directed into the thing that really matters – frontline resources.
Through Great British Energy, Labour is delivering energy security, investing in our public services and delivering lower bills for our communities.”
