Southwark (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Link Age Southwark launches a December campaign with the Big Give to double donations and raise £21,500 to support older residents across the borough.

The organization hopes to raise £10,750 from the general public, which will be matched in order to meet the entire goal and finance essential support services and social groups. With loneliness affecting nearly half of individuals aged 65 and over, the group claims the ad comes at a crucial moment.

Members like Velma and Adassa illustrate how many elderly people might go full days without meaningful discussion, underscoring the necessity for community places that give connection and stimulation.

Link Age Southwark provides free programs and activities that address loneliness by bringing individuals together regularly.

Wellbeing Wednesday, one of its main programs, helps those with dementia via seasonal crafts, oil, collage, and sketching while fostering a vibrant atmosphere where people interact socially and creatively. Every session concludes with a cotillion – and- movement exercise that combines familiar melodies, memory games, and mild exercise.

Among the attendees is 91- year-old Mica, who left Hungary in the 1950s and latterly came to London after her hubby’s death, suffering the loneliness common to loss and ageing. She set up peace and connection at Wellbeing Wednesday, visiting daily and proudly showing her manual particulars at home.

Her daughter, Bibi, says

“Her times spent with the Link Age Southwark community group have been invaluable, keeping her spirits up and her brain ticking over. Apart from family, they are her most treasured and uplifting moments.”

The event runs from Tuesday, 2 December, with all donations received during the week being doubled to help the charity continue its work.

Supporters are asked to enable senior residents like Mica, Velma and Adassa to remain connected, creative and supported within their communities.
