How are the UK, France, Germany, and Ukraine pushing for peace amid Russia’s attacks?

At Downing Street, European leaders will discuss ongoing US–Ukraine negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement to secure Ukraine’s post-war safety.Nearly two weeks ago, the four leaders took part in a virtual “coalition of the willing” meeting, organized by Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron, to plan a European peacekeeping force for Ukraine if a ceasefire is reached.

Despite ongoing talks, Ukraine faces renewed attacks, with Russia launching a major drone and missile strike on Friday night, 5 December.President Zelensky said Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was the primary target of hundreds of Russian drones and nearly 50 missiles, with officials accusing Moscow of seeking to “weaponise” the cold by cutting civilian access to heat and power.

A third day of negotiations between US and Ukrainian officials is taking place in Florida, with US President Donald Trump urging Kyiv to accept a US-supported peace plan.Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected parts of the proposal, with Ukraine’s territorial integrity and safeguards against future Russian aggression cited as key sticking points.

The UK Prime Minister has repeatedly stated that Ukraine must decide its own future, adding that the coalition of the willing’s peacekeeping force will be “vital” in ensuring the country’s security.US and Ukrainian officials confirmed on Friday that progress toward a deal hinges on

“Russia’s willingness to commit seriously to long-term peace.”

What did the White House say about Ukraine’s survival and relations with Russia?

In its latest national security strategy, released overnight Saturday, 6 December, the White House reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine as a “viable state.”The strategy also prioritised improving ties with Moscow, stating that resolving the war is central to the US goal of

“re-establishing strategic stability with Russia.”

According to the White House strategy, Europe’s migration policies are “creating strife, censoring free speech, and suppressing political opposition,

” adding, Europe is experiencing “cratering birthrates,” resulting in a “loss of national identities and self-confidence.”

The White House document suggests that European nations are hindering efforts to secure a peace plan in Ukraine.

It stated,

“The Trump administration finds itself at odds with European officials who hold unrealistic expectations for the war perched in unstable minority governments, many of which trample on basic principles of democracy to suppress opposition.”

The document adds that

“a large European majority wants peace, yet that desire is not translated into policy, in large measure because of those governments’ subversion of democratic processes.”

Which officials are leading the US–Ukraine peace talks in Florida?

The main US officials involved in the Florida discussions are Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who is serving as an informal advisor to the president. From Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and lead negotiator, and Andrii Hnatov, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, are participating in the talks.

US and Ukrainian officials stated talks were “constructive” and agreed on a security framework, but emphasized that

“real progress… depends on Russia’s readiness to show serious commitment to long-term peace.”

The European leaders are also meeting at Downing Street today to discuss the Ukraine peace plan, with the British leader reaffirming support for Kyiv amid the ongoing crisis.
