Kyiv (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Moscow attacked Ukraine’s power facilities, causing emergency outages and air alerts, while Poland deployed jets after recent Miami peace talks.

As reported by Reuters, Russia hit Kyiv and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure early Tuesday, triggering emergency outages and forcing Poland to scramble jets after US-led Miami peace discussions.

Over the weekend in Miami, American officials met with Ukrainian and European delegations, holding separate meetings with Russian representatives, as Washington explored potential ways to end the conflict in Ukraine.

What impact did Russian attacks have on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure?

Ukraine’s air force reported air raid warnings covering the country by 0620 GMT, while debris from strikes damaged windows near a residential building in Sviatoshynskyi, Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

Following new Russian attacks on energy facilities, Ukraine’s energy minister said emergency power outages were implemented across Kyiv and multiple other regions.

The minister added,

“As soon as the security situation allows, rescue teams and energy specialists will begin addressing the consequences of the attack to restore electricity supply in the regions as quickly as possible.”

During the nearly four-year war, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, escalating winter attacks to disrupt electricity and heating, strain logistics, and increase pressure on Kyiv.

Multiple Ukrainian cities face major air raid alerts after Russian forces launched large-scale missile and drone strikes, targeting energy sites in the country’s western regions.

According to Ukraine’s public broadcaster, explosions were reported in the western city of Rivne, as well as in Burshtyn and Rohatyn in Ivano-Frankivsk, while blasts were also heard near Cherkasy city.

What prompted Poland to mobilize aircraft amid Russian strikes?

Polish Armed Forces confirmed Poland deployed jets in the early hours following Russia’s airstrikes on Ukraine.

According to the armed forces, Poland deployed jets to protect its airspace as a preventive measure.

The operational command of the armed forces said,

“Fighter jets were scrambled, and ground-based air-defence and radar reconnaissance systems were put on heightened readiness.”

It added,

“These measures are preventive in nature and are aimed at securing and protecting the airspace, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened regions.”

What did Volodymyr Zelensky say about the Ukraine peace negotiations?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said negotiations with US and European officials to end Moscow’s war in Ukraine are “very close to a real result.”

He sent his negotiation team, including senior official Rustem Umerov, who held a series of meetings with US and European officials in Florida.

Mr Zelensky stated,

“It all looks quite worthy… And here it is important that this is the work of both us (Ukraine) and the United States of America. This suggests that we are very close to a real result.”

According to him, the negotiators have been working on a 20-point plan proposed by US envoys, under discussion for weeks after an initial draft was criticized for favoring Russia.

He said,

“Not everything is ideal with this, but the plan is there.”

President Zelensky stated Ukraine is strengthening its intelligence and air defenses ahead of Christmas amid expectations of large-scale Russian air strikes.

He added,

“When the Germans and the Americans proposed a Christmas ceasefire, there was nothing new in the fact that the Russians immediately jumped in and said: no, we do not want anything like that. The problem is that when Russia says there will be no Christmas ceasefire, that is, in principle, always what they say – they deliberately underscore such statements.”

Mr Zelensky said,

“After these signals from them, I instructed our intelligence services to significantly step up their work and get a clear picture of where we stand.”

He added,

“We understand that precisely on these days they may – this is in their nature – carry out massive strikes on Christmas. And today we had a Staff meeting on this, and the number one issue was air defense: the protection of our cities, villages, and communities, especially on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th. This needs to be paid attention to.”

The Ukrainian president said the forces

“must pay attention directly, ensure protection as much as they can. Everything is very difficult, because there is, unfortunately, a shortage of air defence systems.”

How did the Kremlin describe the latest US-Russia talks on Ukraine?

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the recent Miami talks between Russian and US officials on Ukraine should not be seen as a breakthrough.

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aide, the talks are a ‘working process’ expected to continue at an expert level, as Russia seeks details of US efforts with European and Ukrainian officials on a possible settlement.

He said Moscow would then assess how closely those proposals aligned with what he described as the “spirit of Anchorage.”
