Canada (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Canadian star Evangeline Lilly suffered a traumatic brain injury in a Hawaii accident last year and is now undergoing treatment to recover fully.
As reported by Annabel Nugent of The Independent, Lost actress Evangeline Lilly, 46, shared a health update, revealing on Instagram that she was diagnosed with a brain injury after a Hawaii accident in May.
What did Evangeline Lilly reveal about her brain injury after the Hawaii accident?
On Friday, May 30, 2025, Evangeline Lilly fainted and fell head-first onto a boulder on a Hawaii beach, suffering a serious head injury.
The Canadian actress, who played Kate Austen across all six seasons of Lost, was on holiday in Hawaii, where the series was primarily filmed between 2004 and 2010, when the accident occurred.
In a video posted on Instagram, she said,
“It’s late on January 1, the first day of 2026, and I’m entering the new year with some bad news about my concussion.”
Lilly stated,
“A lot of you have asked how I’m doing. A lot of you have enquired about the brain scan that you heard I got. The results came back from the scan, and almost every area in my brain is functioning at a decreased capacity.”
She added,
“I do have brain damage from the TBI (traumatic brain injury) and possibly other factors going on. My job now is to get to the bottom of that with my doctors. Then I’ll embark on the hard work of fixing it, which I’m not looking forward to – I feel like hard work is all I do. But that’s OK. My cognitive decline is because I smashed my face open [but] it’s helped me to slow down.”
Lilly said the injury encouraged her to slow down, calling her latest Christmas the most restful she has had since the births of her two sons in 2011 and 2015.
She concluded,
“I’m still feeling extraordinarily grateful and blessed to be able to play for one more day, one more year on this beautiful living planet. So, that is my concussion update. Thank you all for caring.”
The Lost actress revealed the extent of her injuries in a Substack post, sharing images that showed stitches between her nose and lip and lighter cuts on her chin.
She wrote,
“I fainted at the beach. And fell face first into a boulder. At the hospital, the nurses and doctor went straight into action, more determined to find the cause of my blackout than to stitch up the hole punctured into my face by the rock. I smiled wryly at them. ‘You won’t find anything.’ I said with a woozy voice.”
According to her Substack post, she has experienced fainting spells since childhood and was later diagnosed with hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.
Lilly added,
“But, as I got older, and other health issues started to enter the picture, my doctor started doing a LOT of blood work. What was interesting was how, even after a 12-hour fast, even after blacking out, my glucose levels never came back as low. Hypoglycemia, it seemed, was being ruled out.”
