UK (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Nottingham Forest names Ange Postecoglou as new manager, taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo after the Portuguese coach was relieved of his duties.

As reported by The Telegraph, Ange Postecoglou is set to take charge at Nottingham Forest after Nuno Espirito Santo’s departure.

What changes will Ange Postecoglou bring to Nottingham Forest?

Ange Postecoglou arrived at Nottingham Forest training on Tuesday, agreeing a contract through next season with owner Evangelos Marinakis.

After departing Tottenham at the end of last season, the former Spurs and Celtic manager makes his return to coaching just weeks after lifting the Europa League.

Ahead of his debut match, the 60-year-old will lead training as Tottenham prepare to face Arsenal on Saturday.

Postecoglou plans to bring key members of his previous Spurs coaching staff to the City Ground.

In July, Postecoglou and Marinakis attended a dinner together, highlighting their long-standing connection. The Greek Super League honoured Postecoglou, with Marinakis offering high praise for his achievement.

Evangelos Marinakis’ views on Ange Postecoglou

Evangelos Marinakis stated at the ceremony,

“What I want to say about Ange is that he has spoken about Greece many times, he is proud to be Greek, and in the great success he had with Tottenham by winning the Europa League, he spoke about Greece.”

He said,

“He is a man who not only does not hide his origin but is also proud of it. What he achieved, he did with a team that has not won any titles, it has had a very difficult time in recent years. In this huge success that the whole world saw, he promoted Greece.”

Mr Marinakis added,

“We must thank him especially for this, and we wish him well, although we are sure that he will do well as he has the ability. Wherever he goes, the successes will come.”

What did Nottingham Forest say about Nuno’s exit?

Nottingham Forest confirmed Nuno’s departure after planned crisis talks with Marinakis did not take place.

They said,

“Nottingham Forest Football Club confirms that, following recent circumstances, Nuno Espírito Santo has today been relieved of his duties as head coach.”

The club added,

“The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era at The City Ground, in particular his role in the 2024/25 season, which will forever be remembered fondly in the history of the club. As someone who played a pivotal role in our success last season, he will always hold a special place in our journey.”

South Melbourne FC’s stance on Ange Postecoglou’s rise to European glory

South Melbourne Football Club posted on X,

“Ange Postecoglou – the man, the myth, our legend.”

They added,

“From his early days as a Hellas junior, to a championship-winning captain and coach, Ange has gone on to become a serial winner wherever he’s been. His football journey is truly one of a kind. Now, he stands as a European champion with @SpursOfficial.”

Fabrizio Romano’s stance on Postecoglou’s move to Nottingham Forest

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano posted on X,

“Ange Postecoglou has been appointed as new Nottingham Forest head coach.”

He added,

“Contract approved now by lawyers on both sides as Postecoglou will sign deal until June 2027 at #NFFC. Clear favorite since last night and deal now in place with Marinakis.”

What did Nuno say about his dismissal amid broken ties with Nottingham Forest?

Nuno’s position became uncertain following a breakdown in his ties with Nottingham Forest’s director, Edu, recently appointed from Arsenal.

He acknowledged “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” amid Italian reports linking him to a possible exit. He refused to quit, yet the club confirmed his dismissal.

Under Nuno, Forest reached their best league position in three decades, yet the club had hoped for more after heavy investment in the team.

What led Nottingham Forest to appoint Ange Postecoglou after Nuno’s dismissal?

Brendan Rodgers, facing challenges in his final year at Celtic, and Jose Mourinho, recently sacked by Fenerbahce, were reportedly considered for the Nottingham Forest role.

Sources indicate that Postecoglou, a fellow Greek who grew up in Australia, was dismissed by Tottenham Hotspur over the summer despite winning the Europa League, their first trophy in 17 years.

The Forest owner wants a more attacking brand of football, believing Postecoglou is the coach to deliver it.

Reports suggested Nuno cast doubts on his own commitment by raising concerns over his dealings with the club. Sources say Marinakis was reportedly angered, straining his relationship with the head coach.

Nuno stood by Marinakis, but Forest’s drop from third to seventh cost them a Champions League spot, a setback that has now proven costly for the coach.

Key details about Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest was founded in 1865 when a group of shinty players met at the Clinton Arms pub and switched to football, playing their first match against Notts County in 1866.

The club took its name from the Forest Recreation Ground, linking it to the legendary Sherwood Forest. Forest introduced early innovations such as shin guards in 1874 and the first match with a referee whistle in 1878. The team also adopted its iconic “Garibaldi red” shirts in tribute to Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi.
