As tensions in Ukraine escalate, Xi and Putin decry Nato expansion

BEIJING (Parliament Politics Magazine): Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin signed a joint statement appealing the west to “give up the ideologised methods of the cold war, as the two leaders showed their warming friendship amidst a heated exchange with the west ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

Putin and Xi called on Nato to eliminate expansion in eastern part of Europe, opposed the establishment of security blocs in the Asia-Pacific area, and condemned the Aukus trilateral security pact between the UK, Australia and the US in a joint statement given by the Kremlin.

It is the 38th meeting between the two leaders since the year 2013. The two countries also agreed to increase cooperation in order to foil “colour revolutions” and external intervention, as well as to enhance “back-to-back” strategic coordination.

According to observers, the declaration demonstrates how Russia and China have progressively found common ground in their various battles with Western nations.

The parties resist further Nato expansion, appealed the North Atlantic alliance to give up the cold war’s ideologised methods, respect other countries’ sovereignty, security, and interests, the distinctiveness of their civilisational and cultural traits, and treat the peaceful progress of other states fairly and objectively, the document stated.

With a hint of agreement to Russia’s interests in Ukraine, China said that it understood and supported the suggestions put up by the Russian Federation on forming long-term legally obligatory security guarantees in Europe, according to the document.

It addressed worries in its own region at the same time about US-led trade and security partnerships.

The parties are in opposition to the establishment of closed bloc structures and opposing camps in the Asia-Pacific region, and they remain extremely concerned about the damaging impact of the US Indo-Pacific strategy on regional peace and stability, it stated.

According to a translation done by the Kremlin of their statements, Xi told Putin, they were  working together intending to bring multilateralism to life. Preserving the true spirit of democracy is a solid foundation for bringing the world together in the face of crises and defending equality.

He’ll meet with more than 20 heads of state as Beijing prepares to host the Winter Olympics, which it believes will be a soft-power victory and divert attention away from a buildup marred by a diplomatic boycott and Covid worries.
