Barnet (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Motorists in Barnet should prepare for five National Highways road closures this week, with potential travel disruptions and detours expected nearby.
It is anticipated that one of them would result in delays of ten to thirty minutes.
According to National Highways’ in barnet most recent expected works list, one closure that is now in effect is anticipated to continue this week.
There will be minor (less than ten-minute) delays on the A1 southbound from 10 p.m. on August 18 to 6 a.m. on September 13 due to lane closures for culvert work at the intersection of Bignells Corner and Rowley Lane.
Additionally, during the next two weeks, four more closures will start.
M1 southbound, junction 4 to junction 3, lane closure for CCTV work, minor delays (less than 10 minutes) from 10 p.m. on August 26 to 5.30 a.m. on August 28.
M1 southbound, junction 2, lane and slip road closure for concrete works, diversion via Local Authorities network, moderate delays (10-30 minutes) from 10 p.m. on August 26 to 5.30 a.m. on September 16.
M1 northbound, junction 2 to junction London Gateway Services, lane closures for barrier works, minor delays (less than 10 minutes) from 10 p.m. on August 26 to 6 a.m. on August 30.
There may be minor (less than ten-minute) delays on the M1 northbound from 9.30 p.m. on September 1 to 6 a.m. on September 27 due to lane closures for boundary fence replacements at junctions 1 and 2.
Smaller road closures won’t be part of National Highways’ agenda because they are in charge of maintaining major A-roads and motorways.
How will these closures impact peak-time traffic and public transport?
While closures will mostly occur overnight, they will still create traffic bottlenecks along alternative routes as motorists attempt to divert around the closed sections of highway, resulting in longer travel times during the morning and evening congestion periods.
Motorists commuting on these roads, especially where few convenient alternatives exist, may find themselves subject to unreliable delays, adding stress to travel times and potentially increasing the accident risk. With main road sections closed, traffic may even divert to smaller local streets, resulting in congested conditions in neighborhoods not designed to accommodate heavy through traffic.
Buses may experience a delay or a route diversion, which will result in itinerary changes and add to service unreliability, especially during peak morning and evening commute periods, when buses are most frequent.
