Bromley (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Beckenham town centre in Bromley was shut this morning after a major high street fire near Odeon cinema. Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters tackled the blaze.
Crews from Beckenham, Bromley, Woodside, Forest Hill, and other fire stations responded to the incident shortly before eight in the morning. The fire was contained by 10.30 a.m.
According to the London Fire Brigade:
“The fire was fully affecting the roof of a mixed-use building, currently under refurbishment, as well as the first and second floors of the building. This building has sustained a significant amount of damage as a result of the fire.”
In order to help put out the fire from above, a 32-meter turntable ladder from Forest Hill was also there and used as a water tower. Additionally, the Brigade’s drone crew was sent out to visually evaluate the rooftop fire.
Because of the volume of smoke produced, residents were recommended to keep their windows closed.
Crews stay on the site to dampen down and completely put out the fire.
As of right now, no injuries have been reported.
Station Commander Tony Perks, who was at the scene, said:
“Firefighters have worked extremely hard to prevent the fire spreading significantly to adjoining buildings, including a cinema, resulting in very limited damage to those buildings.
The incident continues to cause major traffic disruption in Beckenham and we are asking people to avoid travelling through the area whilst the incident remains ongoing as road closures are in place.”
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
What roads and transport services are affected currently?
All vehicles are prohibited from entering Beckenham High Street and nearby roads through the town centre, in order for emergency services to operate safely.
Bus and public services through Beckenham town centre have been cancelled or diverted.
Motorists are advised to stay clear of the area and take alternative routes as there is severe traffic congestion in the area. Those on foot are also being asked to stay out of the cordoned area due to safety and fire operations while in the area.
The London Fire Brigade and Bromley Council are in attendance and are monitoring the situation. Further updates will follow in due course and when roads begin to open.
