Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has opened up on his side’s inconsistency following their surprise 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Monday night. The Blues took the lead but conceded two second-half goals to ensure they leave Molineux with nothing to their name. And the Blues boss was far from happy after the game.
Chelsea went into the match against Wolves looking to bounce back after a 1-0 defeat to Everton last time out.
However, the Blues slipped to yet another loss with goals from Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto giving the home side all three points.
Chelsea took the lead through Olivier Giroud before Podence levelled.
Wolves stole all three points at the death, with Neto striking in the 95th minute to deal a huge blow to Lampard’s side.
For Chelsea, it represents another difficult night at the office.
And Lampard, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, reflected on the showdown at Molineux.
On what’s caused back-to-back defeats, he said: “Performance.
“Performance is what gives you results, and we had a long run of good performances but maybe the lads think we’re playing well, and when you think you’re playing well this is what happens.”
That suggests Lampard thinks complacency could be behind Chelsea’s struggles.
And he said of his players: “Maybe it’s for the players to think about the game while they’re resting.
“Think about tonight, think about Everton. This is the Premier League and if you don’t perform, you lose games.”
Lampard feels Chelsea were naive in trying to win the game rather than settling for a point.
“At 1-0 we should see the game out,” he said.
“If you’re not playing that well, which we weren’t tonight, hang on to 1-0. Control the game. Don’t allow counter-attacks. And we did.”
Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante was similarly unhappy, with the France international admitting they made mistakes in the defeat.
He honed in on their determination to get forward, expressing a belief their eagerness to pick up all three points ultimately counted against them
“We could have managed the game and keep the difference,” he said.
“But when they scored we tried to come back straight away, and by trying to win the game we conceded many counterattacks.
“What’s happened these last two games is not what we want, and we need to get back to winning ways against West Ham next game.”
Wolves matchwinner Neto was delighted after the game, saying: “We are very happy.
“We come here with joy. We want to win so much and we worked hard.
“It was very difficult. We knew Chelsea are a good team. The whole team did very well.”
