Croydon (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Chestnut Park Primary School in Croydon is giving pupils a stronger voice through new leadership roles designed to boost confidence, teamwork and student engagement.
In addition to electing a new School Council and Wellbeing and Eco Champions for Years 4–6, Chestnut Park Primary School Croydon, which is a member of the GLF Schools Multi Academy Trust, has welcomed new headteacher Jason Ofori.
Suzie Jones, assistant headteacher, said:
“We are keen to continue empowering pupils to take ownership of initiatives that support healthy relationships, positive mental health and environmental awareness.”
The new group expands upon the collaboration with the RE:SET initiative and educational charity Tender from the previous year, which helps youth establish boundaries, navigate online environments securely, and realize the value of speaking up.
Mr. Ofori, who started his job earlier this month, reported that the staff, kids, and their families had welcomed him with open arms.
He said:
“Pupil leadership is at the very heart of our personal development offer.
Over the academic year students will have the opportunity to put their leadership skills to the test both inside and out of the classroom.
It is an extra privilege for students to be selected as part of the eco team or school council; election period is definitely a highlight for the school.
It has been a pleasure watching the nominees put so much effort into their presentations.
Their commitment in wanting to contribute to the wider school life has been a highlight of my first few weeks.”
In addition to representing the student body and helping staff organize important school events, the School Council will spearhead fundraising efforts for new projects.
The Week Gr8 initiative later this month is one of the great activities that the Wellbeing and Eco Group is trying to promote.
In addition, the team intends to create a Clean Up Crew, hold contests for the cleanest classroom, and turn the outside learning deck into a wellness garden.
What leadership roles will be available for staff at Chestnut Park?
Facilitating the lead of teaching and learning school-wide for a year group, ensuring that there is delivering consistently and to a high standard.
Consistent opportunities for accomplished teachers to take on leadership opportunities and take an active role in school improvement. Examples could include Deputy Headteacher, Associate Deputy Headteachers, and senior leadership positions that support management responsibilities within the school.
Leading specific subject areas, or specific aspects of the curriculum, to support development and implementation for the school. The program is primarily for students; however, opportunities like the School Council and Eco Council, assist in developing leadership opportunities for the wider school community.
