Ealing (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Ealing Council has completed a revamp of North Acton Square, shaped by resident feedback, aiming to improve public space and community use.

To address local concerns regarding its look, a refurbishment is planned for the public area near North Acton tube station.

The square was formerly a gas station, thus it is relatively new. But from 2015 to 2019, the area was removed and transformed into a public square with a slope and steps that descend to the station.

A row of “shed” stores that will be rented out and improved lighting are among the improvements that Ealing Council has now begun to implement.

According to the council, it already has a few tenants:

  • Existing coffee vendor, Awakener Coffee (currently operating from a cart in the square)
  • Street food vendor Sound Burger
  • A barbershop, Hamsa the Barber
  • A Micro Pub, Old Oak Tap
  • A shop selling local products, Supermegahyperdupermarketmetroexpress

There will also be a new ‘village hut’ for residents to use as a social space.

Council leader Peter Mason said:

“Back in 2021 we asked our residents what they thought about North Acton’s streets and spaces. We have developed these plans for the revitalised square based on the ideas and suggestions of local people, who know the area better than most.”

The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation, The Republic Community Projects, Imperial College London, City & Docklands, ADD Properties, and Downing are collaborating with Ealing Council to implement the changes.

How will the council address anti-social behaviour long-term?

The improvement plan includes upgraded lighting, a graffiti removal program and trimming back overgrown shrubbery to increase visibility, and reduce areas to hide.

The council has invested in the “village hut” social space developed by Republic Community Projects to promote positive community activity through events, workshops, and markets. Community engagement and regular programming will be key contributors to reduce anti-social activity.

The council will work closely with local police to ensure a high level of response to incidents, increased patrols, and a coordinated crime prevention approach in the square.
