Ealing (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Ealing Democrats are calling on Labour‑run Ealing to repair a damaged footpath near Lammas Park, after residents complained about construction for months.

Residents expressed concerns about damage to the Elers Road footpath during a public meeting hosted by West Ealing Neighbours (WEN) earlier this month (October 14, 2025). They claimed that heavy vehicles were responsible for the damage while a Sustainable Urban Drainage Scheme (SUDS) was being built to lessen flooding.

Many claimed that after reporting the problem via the Love Clean Streets app and the council’s roads department, no fixes had been implemented.

Last weekend, Ealing Liberal Democrat Councillor Gary Malcolm came to the park to meet locals and look around.

The party has started a petition asking the council to take action and demanded an independent evaluation of the SUDS project.

Local resident and Ealing Lib Dem activist Matt Mellor, who attended the meeting, said: “It is unacceptable that the council isn’t fixing the problems caused by the SUDS scheme, especially the potholes and standing water on the damaged Elers Road footpath. After two years the scheme still hasn’t been delivered in full by the council and Thames Water.”

In response, an Ealing Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the condition of the footpath. Inspections indicate that there may be a leak affecting the footpath between Elers Road and Lammas Park. The footpath was not part of the SUDS work.

We looked into the utilities under the footpath between 28 and 30 Elers Road and engaged with Thames Water, who will further investigate the issue. Our contractor has been instructed to carry out investigations to confirm if there is any leak and fix it. To avoid the need for repeat work, we will not proceed with footpath repairs until this potential water leak issue has been rectified. We hope to carry out the repairs to the footpath in November.”

What funding or budget covers footpath repairs in the 2025 highways plan?

The 2025 roadways plan for Ealing Council allocates funding specifically for path and pavement repairs as part of its broader roadways and Transport Programme. Although exact numbers for path repairs within Ealing’s plan weren’t completely delineated.

At a broader position, typical London city trace budgets for 2025 allocate several million pounds for road and pavement conservation across public paths and roadways. This is aligned with council pretensions to ameliorate safety and structure quality, including public walkways like those near Lammas Park.

Hence, path repairs near Lammas Park would be covered under these routine structure conservation budgets within the 2025 roadways programme, drawing from both planned capital spend and fresh allocations grounded on urgency and condition assessments.
