Croydon (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Flood prevention works in Kenley, Croydon, will lead to traffic diversions as the council takes steps to protect residents from future flood risks.

Following years of local complaints and earlier, disjointed attempts to address the problem, flood mitigation work is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 20, on Park Road in Kenley, between Bakers Close and Hayes Lane.

A portion of the road next to Kenley Station will be closed for a little over two weeks due to the construction, which Croydon Council estimates will be completed on Wednesday, November 5.

It is anticipated that buses 434 and 439 to and from Purley will be detoured while the repair is being done.

In addition to building new gullies and manhole covers, the work will involve replacing and renovating the current gully pots.

Additionally, kerb adjustments, “footway reprofiling,” and carriageway resurfacing and repainting will be done.

Park Road between Oaks Way and Hayes Lane will be closed to traffic while the repair is being done.  Pedestrian access will be preserved, and plans for emergency services and the garbage collection trucks will be implemented.

“It is inevitable that disruptions will occur,”

the ward council members said in an announcement.

They said:

“Residents who would normally park their vehicles on this section of Park Road are required to make alternative parking arrangements while residents who may be expecting delivery of large items during the road closure are expected to reschedule the delivery with the supplier.”

And they add:

“Conway will do all that is feasible to keep the disruptions down to a minimum, the cooperation of residents is required to ensure that the essential road works are completed safely and as quickly as possible.”

Drivers and residents in Kenley have been told to check the road signs regularly for updates.

What funding has been allocated for flood prevention in Kenley?

The flood alleviation works on Park Road, Kenley: is one of Croydon Council’s ongoing measures to rectify local flooding issues through upgrades to drainage and flood mitigation infrastructure.

Funding for flood alleviation works mostly comes from the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Grant in Aid (FCERM GIA) from the central government, which is administered by the Environment Agency for DEFRA. Additional funding may come from the local business community, residents and developers who are beneficiaries of the works.

There will also be a capital budget for smaller scale flood hotspot alleviation schemes if they do not meet the criteria for central funding.
