Haringey (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Haringey honours women, including former MP Joyce Butler, with events, exhibitions, and tributes, highlighting contributions to music, politics, and beyond.

Women’s History Month, which takes place in March every year, gives us all the opportunity to highlight the ongoing fight for gender equality and the significant difficulties that women face today.

It also allows us to focus on and learn about the amazing stories of women from the past and present.

Since 2025 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Sex Discrimination Act of 1975, a significant new research project centered on Joyce Butler, a Haringey councillor and MP who spearheaded this historic law, will be introduced as part of this year’s program.

On Thursday, March 13, Bruce Castle Museum will host a special event to kick off the project, which is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

The London DJ and MC Academy is hosting an event called Her Sound, which honors Haringey women who are creating waves in the music and creative industries.

This is just one of dozens of events happening throughout Haringey.

The following are further features of Haringey’s 2025 program:

  • The Public Health team at Haringey is hosting an Accelerating Action event on Friday, March 7, in honor of International Women’s Day.
  • Beyond Limits: Women Rising Together is the title of the empowerment session being held by Daughters United on Friday, March 21.
  • Meet Hornsey Library’s internationally acclaimed novelist, Christy Lefteri, on Tuesday, March 25.
  • Reach and Connect is holding a Pride in Protest Banner Making workshop for anyone over fifty on Friday, March 28.

Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Emily Arkell, said:

“We’ve got a proud heritage of celebrating women here in Haringey and the role that they have played – and continue to play – in the social fabric of our borough.

We’ve got a range of fabulous events to celebrate Women’s History Month throughout March, with activities for all the family taking place across the borough.

The Joyce Butler heritage project will provide a fascinating and informative insight into the life of the late Wood Green MP, who did so much for women from our borough and beyond by initiating the Sex Discrimination Act, protecting women from unfair treatment and laying the groundwork for modern equalities legislation.”

They added that there are a lot more besides as well.

From children’s craft sessions, film screenings and guided walks to banner-making workshops, health events and ‘Meet the Author’ sessions, there’s something for everyone to experience and enjoy this Women’s History Month.
