Haringey (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Haringey Mayor Councillor Ahmed Mahbub visited a Tottenham community hub to commend 30 “local heroes” for their outstanding service.
Under the direction of Sophia Charles, who was named the 2024 Haringey Mayor’s Hero Award winner, the volunteer team received recognition for their efforts through the Tottenham Lighthouse Community Hub, an initiative that offers warm spaces, food, hope, and mental health help five days a week.
More than 200 locals and churchgoers attended the “inspiring” event, which was also viewed by 300 people online. Mayor Ahmed Mahbub and deputy mayor Michelle Simmons-Safo were present for the community volunteer award service.
Dr Jude Jeanville, pastor of the Tottenham Lighthouse Seventh-day Adventist Church in West Green Road which hosts the hub, said:
“People matter – In a world that measures worth by wealth, appearance, or productivity, it’s easy to forget that every person matters and every person deserves value, dignity and hope.”
The hub has provided more than £20,000 in direct financial aid, helps more than 1,200 family members, and assists more than 300 residents per week.
Its yearly impact on the community currently surpasses £150,000. Additionally, the church runs another outreach program called “Sharing the Love,” which is led by Maxine Donovan.
Its goal is to reach residents one-on-one and help them with things like sim cards, legal advice, and connecting them with energy suppliers and other council services.
Cllr. Ahmed praised the church for bringing love to the neighborhood.
The church and community leaders thanked the Godwin Lawson Foundation, Stratford SDA Church, Luke and Reena, Hanwell SDA Church, Soho Sandwiches, Auldrea and Kingsley Onyemenem, Movery Livingston, and 3Food4U (Pesh) for their continued support.
