Haringey (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Haringey celebrated carers with the launch of its new Carers Strategy at Alexandra Palace, highlighting expanded support measures and recognition for unpaid carers.

Launched on Carers Rights Day, the inspiring document places a high priority on useful changes that actually improve the lives of carers.

It seeks to provide a better selection of respite choices, expedite Carer’s Assessments, and guarantee clearer and faster access to information.

There will be more support for the employment, health, and well-being of carers, with an emphasis on training.

The new approach focuses on lived experiences to influence the priorities and provision of future support in order to highlight the unwavering strength of caretakers, many of whom support others without acknowledgement.

Cllr Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing said:

“Carers are the heart of our communities. This strategy is more than just a document – it’s a commitment to listen, to act, and to stand together with every carer in Haringey. Launching it on Carers Rights Day is a powerful reminder of the rights carers hold and the respect they deserve.

Whether they are balancing work and family, navigating their own health while caring for someone else, or part of a community that’s often underrepresented – this strategy is for them. It reflects their journey, their challenges, and their aspirations.

We know carers value connection, collaboration, and being heard. Their experiences have shaped this strategy, ensuring it’s rooted in real life and focused on delivering meaningful change.

This is our roadmap to improving wellbeing, resilience, and recognition for carers of all backgrounds. And we’re committed to walking that path together – side by side with carers, bringing their priorities to life.”

How will the new strategy change carer assessments and eligibility?

The strategy prioritizes minimizing and covering delay times for guardian assessments through a triage system, icing critical cases are addressed instantly. It plans to review and gauge assessments according to individual requirements, circumstances, and preferences, and encourages common assessments with concurrence from caregivers and those they watch for.

The strategy aims to make assessments more harmonious, transparent, and outgrowth- concentrated, with a clearer understanding of eligibility criteria. It emphasizes simplifying the assessment process, including potentially espousing a standardised approach across original authorities to reduce confusion and variability.

The strategy promotes a more flexible approach, considering shifting requirements and circumstances, and offering re-assessment openings. These changes aim to make guardian assessments more accessible, timely, fair, and responsive, icing caregivers admit the applicable support grounded on their individual situations.
