Haringey (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Haringey Council wins two MJ Achievement Awards 2025, recognised for its innovative and pioneering service delivery model in local government excellence.

The council defeated fierce competition to win the Innovation in Reducing Health Inequalities and Innovation in Children’s and Adult’s Services awards.

Every year, the Municipal Journal organizes the coveted awards, which honor the commitment of individuals serving their communities and highlight excellent practices in local public services.

The Children’s Service and the Metropolitan Police Service won this award in the Innovation in Children’s and Adult’s Services category in Haringey for a groundbreaking project that approaches stop and search from a safeguarding perspective, aiming to protect children and support those who might be negatively impacted by the stop and search.

For their innovative efforts to address the negative effects of gambling, including being the nation’s first council to join the Coalition to End Gambling Ads, the Public Health Team won in the Reducing Health Inequalities category.

Cllr Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing said:

“We are delighted to see the gambling harms programme be recognised in the Reducing Health Inequalities category.

We have seen the harm gambling can have on residents, and we are proud to work with partners, people with lived experience, and our healthcare system colleagues to create new ways to tackle the harms done.

We will continue to be innovators and leaders in this space and in tackling health inequalities in our borough.”

Cllr Zena Brabazon, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to have this pioneering approach recognised on a national stage.

Using stop and search as a safeguarding tool which has been co-designed with young people highlights what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration.

We have already seen it shaping practice far beyond Haringey – that’s not only something to celebrate but also a fantastic achievement. Thank you to everyone who was involved.”

The Highways and Transport teams received high praise in the Best Transport Decarbonization category at the same awards for the council’s three low-traffic neighborhoods, which have significantly reduced traffic inside the schemes and made it safer and easier for residents to walk, ride their bikes, scoot, and shop locally.

The multi-award-winning Housing Delivery Team completed Haringey’s quartet of nominations by competing in the Innovation in Housing category for their Woodridings Court project, which will turn an abandoned underground parking lot and antisocial behavior hotspot into 33 luxurious, energy-efficient council homes.

Announcing the winners took place on June 20, 2025.

What specific innovative services earned Haringey its awards in 2025?

A groundbreaking project that employs Stop & Search incidents as an intervention strategy to protect vulnerable children and youth was acknowledged by Haringey’s Children’s Services and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).

This creative strategy improves protection and results for vulnerable groups by using police data to identify youth who are at danger and offer prompt assistance.

For their innovative efforts to address the negative effects of gambling, the council’s Public Health Team was awarded. Haringey showed leadership in tackling a major public health issue via policy innovation and community participation by becoming the first council in the nation to join the Coalition to End Gambling Ads.
