Harrow (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Abdul Khan, 27, of Durham Road, Harrow, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act at the Old Bailey on March 25.

Khan was also subject to an extra Section 41 order, which states that his hospital discharge can only be approved by the Secretary of State for Justice or a tribunal.

Khan entered a guilty plea to charges of possessing an offensive weapon and manslaughter of Bohdan Vandzhura via diminished responsibility.

In connection with another individual he assaulted in Harrow, he was also admitted to the attempted murder. Additionally, he was found guilty of ABH in connection with this victim.

For aiding an offender in connection with this incident, his father, Khalid Khan, 62 (22.04.62) of Durham Road, Harrow, received a four-year jail sentence.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Williams, who led the investigation, said:

“Our thoughts remain with Mr Vandzhura’s family and friends.

Bohdan was a loving father-of-two who was assaulted, unprovoked, and tragically died from his injuries.

Abdul Hussain demonstrated a pattern of violent behaviour and posed a clear threat to the public.

He will now remain in a safe place to get the treatment he needs.”

On the morning of July 8, 2023, police were alerted to reports of a stabbing on Pinner Road in North Harrow, prompting the Specialist Crime Command to begin an investigation.

In addition to officers, the London Air Ambulance and London Ambulance Service were there. Bohdan, 49, was discovered at the site with stab wounds. He passed away in spite of their attempts.

He died from multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest, according to a post-mortem examination conducted the next day.

After looking through local CCTV footage, detectives were able to follow Khan’s actions and saw him throwing away the weapon and leaving Bohdan’s house.

As a result, they were able to promptly identify and apprehend Khan.

Khan will continue to receive monitoring and mental health treatment as a result of these directives. Tribunals and mental health specialists will periodically analyze his development to determine whether he is ready for release.

Additionally, the video gave them proof that his father, Khalid Khan, had left the house with a carrier bag that turned out to have his son’s bloody clothes.

On July 8, Abdul Khan was taken into custody and charged the same day. He entered a guilty plea to possession of an offensive weapon and manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

Detectives also determined that Khan was a suspect in two more offenses that occurred prior to Bohdan’s passing as part of this investigation.

Khan repeatedly stamped on a 43-year-old man in Pinner Road, Harrow, after punching him to the ground on August 20, 2022, rendering him unconscious.

On February 10, 2023, he also attacked the same individual a second time.

At the time, officers conducted an inquiry but failed to identify a suspect. However, authorities were able to piece together evidence after the Bohdan assault inquiry, making it evident that Khan was the main suspect in the attack.

What are the key highlights of Abdul Khan’s case?

Khan entered a guilty plea to Bohdan Vandzhura’s manslaughter by diminished responsibility and offensive weapon possession.

In addition, he was found guilty of actual bodily harm to a second victim and attempted murder. In this instance, Khan’s father, Khalid Khan, received a four-year prison sentence for aiding an offender.

Khan’s behavior was associated with mental health conditions, particularly paranoid schizophrenia.

His later aggressive behavior was partly caused by his misdiagnosis of an alcohol condition prior to his release from a mental health facility.

A Section 37 order mandates that Khan be treated in a medical facility. When the court determines that the offender’s mental illness requires hospitalization for treatment, this is the proper course of action.

Khan’s hospital discharge will need to be approved by the Secretary of State for Justice or a tribunal due to the extra Section 41 order.
