Hounslow (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Hounslow Council has submitted its emerging Local Plan to the Secretary of State for independent examination, outlining development goals through to 2041.

The Plan presents a bold and sustainable vision for Hounslow’s future, addressing the climate crisis, fostering regeneration, and providing much-needed affordable housing and jobs.

Following two rounds of in-depth public consultation in 2023 and 2024, the submission was made.

A Local Plan that accurately represents the goals and possibilities of Hounslow’s varied communities was shaped with the participation of hundreds of citizens, companies, and community organizations.

Important details of the Local Plan:

By 2041, it will contribute to the national housing targets by delivering a minimum of 28,800 additional houses.

Aims for 50% strategic affordable housing, with 70% of that amount anticipated to be socially rented.

20,000 new jobs are supported by the allocation of about 56 hectares of employment land throughout the borough.

Encourages placemaking, infrastructure development, and revitalization in developing neighborhoods like the West of Borough and the Golden Mile.

Enhances access to green space and helps Hounslow reach its net zero goals by integrating strict sustainability and environmental regulations.

Cllr Tom Bruce, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Assets, Regeneration and Development, said:

“The submission of our Local Plan is a significant milestone for Hounslow and reflects years of work, collaboration, and input from our residents and partners.

I would like to sincerely thank all those who took part in the consultation process – including our local community groups, residents, and ward councillors. Your voices have helped shape a Local Plan that balances growth with fairness, sustainability, and local character.

This Plan sets out a bold, deliverable vision for the future of our borough – one that will provide more affordable homes, green jobs, improved infrastructure, and thriving neighbourhoods for years to come.”

The submitted plan will now be reviewed by an impartial planning inspector. Later this year, public hearings are anticipated to be held as part of the examination process.

How does the submitted Local Plan shape Hounslow’s future development to 2041?

With a focus on affordability, the plan aims to satisfy local and national housing requirements by constructing at least 28,800 additional housing by 2041. In order to support those who are most in need, it sets a strategic affordable housing objective of 50%, with 70% of these dwellings anticipated to be socially rented.

A total of 56 hectares of employment land have been set aside to facilitate the establishment of 20,000 new jobs. In order to strengthen Hounslow’s position as a crucial economic entry point to London, the plan gives priority to important businesses including the growing creative industries in the borough’s east and the aviation sector close to Heathrow Airport.

Placemaking projects, infrastructural upgrades, and targeted revitalization will improve quality of life and connectivity in growth areas like the West of Borough and Golden Mile.
