Lambeth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Lambeth Council has appointed muf architecture/art to design ‘Brixton Day and Night’, a community-led plan to revitalise the town centre and public spaces.

Additionally, the project will invite people to help design the future of the town center’s streets, squares, and green spaces by collaborating with local organizations such as Team GJC, The Brixton Recollectors, and Max Roach Adventure Playground.

By maintaining its unique identity, improving accessibility, and better serving the needs of its residents, the plan will pinpoint public space enhancements that enhance Brixton’s standing as one of London‘s most vibrant and renowned town centers.

There will be a focus on involving young people, including training opportunities in research and interview techniques, and Brixton’s companies and inhabitants will be invited to participate in interviews, walkabouts, seminars, and one-on-one conversations over the next few months.

The Lambeth council’s successful Atlantic Road car free days, which have been run in partnership with the Brixton BID, will continue until the end of year and provide a chance to test ideas and gather feedback to help shape the wider strategy.

Cllr Danial Adilypour, Lambeth’s Deputy Leader (Housing, Investment and New Homes), said:

“Brixton town centre is incredibly popular, and an internationally renowned destination attracting visitors from across London and beyond.

But it’s also home to a vibrant local community and we want to make sure that residents are able to influence its future especially as new projects develop and as we work to make it ever more appealing as both a place to live, and as a destination.

This is a key moment for us to talk to residents, get their views and ensure they are influencing how we work to improve the area. We want to maintain a vibrant, inclusive and economically strong town centre, while acknowledging there are issues to address.

We know people really value and care about Brixton, so holding these conversations is really important as we look to the future. Change is already happening, and the council has an important opportunity to be proactive and ensure we can all shape that future together.”

The plan is now being consulted on plans to rehabilitate International House and the former parking lot that temporarily hosted Pop Brixton with new residences, offices, street market infrastructure, and public realm investment. The strategy will also assist direct future development.

Additionally, this work will support the council’s broader initiatives to address antisocial behavior, assist individuals in obtaining drug treatment, and enhance service accessibility.

What are the main goals and outcomes of the Brixton Day and Night strategy?

One of the goals of the strategy is to create a more welcoming, safe, and accessible Brixton town centre both day and night for a diverse community.

The strategy aims to increase footfall in public spaces, supporting local markets, cafes, shops, and nightlife by enhancing the night-time economy and enabling local economic growth.

The strategy reduces crime and antisocial behaviour via the Brixton BID street team and regular shared briefings with the police and council safety teams, reducing crime and developing a safer place for residents and visitors.

It works on upgrading the street design – better lighting, seating, greenery and public art to create vibrant and attractive streets with social and cultural activity.
