Lisa Nandy has been named the UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport by newly elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Nandy, who has served as the Member of Parliament for Wigan since 2010, brings significant experience to the role. Prior to this appointment, she was the Shadow Cabinet Minister for International Development and has previously held key positions in housing, foreign and commonwealth affairs, and energy and climate change.

She succeeds former Conservative MP Lucy Frazer, who lost her seat in the July 4 general election. Notably, Thangam Debbonaire, the former Shadow Culture Secretary, also lost her seat, leaving Nandy as the leading candidate for the role.

As Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport, Nandy will oversee the strategic direction and policies of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, including the allocation of grant-in-aid funding for organizations like the British Film Institute (BFI).

The position has seen frequent changes over the years, with 13 different MPs holding the role during the Conservatives’ 14 years in office. This marks an increase from the previous Labour administration, which appointed five different culture secretaries from 1997 to 2010.
