Croydon (Parliament Politics Magazine) – An air ambulance and emergency crews rushed to Surrey Street, Croydon, after a man fell from a height, leaving him with serious injuries, witnesses said.
During a crowded Friday lunchtime, it was believed to have come from the pedestrian walkway over the street market.
Surrey Street was blocked off by police as emergency personnel attended to the man’s wounds.
The walkway is approximately two stories high and between 25 and 30 feet high, providing pedestrian access from the higher level Croydon High Street down to Surrey Street.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told:
“We were called at 12.50pm today to reports of a person fallen from height on Surrey Street, Croydon.
We sent resources, including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
We treated a man for a head injury and took him to hospital as a priority.”
Further updates will be published here as they are received.
What measures have been taken on Surrey Street after this incident?
The new pedestrian bridge at East Croydon Station, which is situated close to Surrey Street, is expected to be open by the end of 2025. Final works which are currently being planned include the manually-raised railings and the improvements to access points to create a safer environment for pedestrians.
Civil works on road safety schemes and the pedestrian infrastructure in the vicinity will continue, involving traffic calming measures, upgraded pedestrian crossing facilities, and raised tables to assist in slowing down the traffic.
Given the complex operational usages of the site that accommodates buses, trams, cyclists, and pedestrians, a suite of comprehensive safety plans for the long-term improvements of pedestrian facilities are being developed and a funding bid is being prepared in conjunction with Transport for London.
