Manchester (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Mayor Andy Burnham is to make a keynote address at the NRLA’s annual meeting in Birmingham next week.

Mayor Andy Burnham who this year informed he was spending £600,000 on a rogue landlord crackdown within the city, will be expressing on 6th November at the event, which is being held at Birmingham’s NEC conference centre.

How is Mayor Burnham addressing rogue landlords in Manchester?

Burnham has been uttered in his calls for bad operators within the private rented sector to be handled via better enforcement, and his crackdown includes a new method of property checking which allows tenants whose landlords won’t operate with the city’s council voluntarily, to request a property review, followed up with enforcement measure. The mayor is scheduled to articulate his position on the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter and how it’s a model of how the public sector can function with industry to improve standards and outcomes.

What role do landlords play in solving the housing crisis?

In the matter of the Housing crisis, he’ll also be discussing how mayors like him can play a function in fixing the housing crisis and, landlords may be pleased to hear, how they have a part too. “We know that new homes on their own won’t solve the housing crisis and the private rented sector is a key partner in helping us meet housing needs across the region,” states Burnham.

“For the thousands in private rented housing, having a good landlord can make a world of difference to their lives. That’s why we have undertaken our Good Landlord Charter, which will give confidence to renters and recognise good landlords. And it’s why we’re investing to develop the local teams who are working to root out those who give the sector a bad name.”

Moreover, the NRLA conference will engage landlords, property professionals, and policymakers to examine the future of the private rented sector at a time when significant changes loom, largely in the form of Labour’s Renters’ Rights Bill, which will go much distant than Tory’s previous effort.
