A post on Robinson’s official Twitter account said: “With tremendous sadness we inform you of Michael’s death.
“It leaves us with a great emptiness, but also countless memories, full of the same love that you have shown him.
“We will be eternally grateful to you for making this man SO HAPPY, he never walked alone. Thank you.”
Robinson also played for Preston, QPR and Osasuna while he made 24 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
Liverpool have paid tribute to Robinson on social media following the sad news.
They posted: “Were deeply saddened by the passing of former player Michael Robinson, aged 61.
“The thoughts of everybody at Liverpool Football Club are with Michaels family and friends at this sad time. Rest in peace, Michael.”
Robinson signed for Liverpool in the summer of 1983 after appearing in the FA Cup final with Brighton for ÂŁ250,000.
The forward would go on to challenge Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish for a starting spot at Anfield.
In extra-time of the 1984 European Cup final against Roma, Robinson replaced Dalglish.
The Reds went on to win their fourth trophy with a famous penalty shootout victory.
Robinson eventually left Liverpool for QPR in the search for first-team football before making the switch abroad to Osasuna.
Robinson retired in 1989 before settling in Spain and becoming a successful pundit in the country.
Tributes have been pouring in this morning after the news of Robinson’s death broke.
Former team-mate and friend Graeme Souness was emotional when talking about it this morning on Sky Sports.
“He was a big pal of mine,” Souness said.
“I’ve got so many fond memories of being in his company.
“If you were going for a night out, Michael would be the first one you would invite. A real charming man, great stories, could tell stories.
“He was a close pal of mine and I’m absolutely sick for his family. It’s a sad day for me.
Tennis legend Rafael Nadal took to social media to post a picture of himself alongside Robinson.
The 19-time Grand Slam winner also wrote: “We woke up with the sad news of the death of one of our own. You were the one who always made us happy about sport. We are grateful to you.
“D.E.P @michaelrobinson. A hug and all possible encouragement to your family.”
Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso also tweeted his condolences, writing: “Youll never walk alone Michael!! Rest in peace.”
