KATE MIDDLETON, the Duchess of Cambridge, is a senior member of the Royal Family. She has an enviable jewellery collection and a jewellery specialist explained why she has started wearing this personal necklace.
Kate Middleton, 38, and Prince William, 37, are the parents of three children. The Duchess of Cambridge has worn many pieces of eye-catching and expensive jewellery over the years, including a new jewel with a sweet link to her family and children.
On her wedding day, Kate walked down the aisle wearing the Cartier Halo Tiara, which is part of the Queen’s collection.
Since then, she has been loaned other pieces of royal jewellery which have captured the attention of royal fans.
As well as wearing lavish and expensive pieces, the Duchess of Cambridge will sometimes make more subtle choices.
Earlier this year, Kate stepped out wearing a necklace with a small gold circlar pendant.
The piece of jewellery made a nod to her children, Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two.
On the pendant, the letters ‘G’, ‘C’ and ‘L’ were written for their initials.
It sat on a long chain which may have shown the significance of the piece to Kate, according to Claire Adler, jewellery specialist and founder of Claire Adler Luxury PR.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, she said: “Initial pendants are a super personal style of accessory and are often worn as a way to celebrate one’s children or other beloved family members.
“A longer necklace allows the wearer to see and remember the pendant and its symbolism at all times.
“This pendant worn by Kate is the gold diamond midnight moon necklace from Daniella Draper, personalised with the initials of Princess Kates three children, with G, C and L proudly referring to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
“The moon charm on the pendant represents immortality, eternity and enlightenment and it is made with 100 percent recycled nine carat gold, which suggests that sustainability is important to Kate, as well as supporting independent, family run British brands.”
As well as giving a nod to her own family, the royal shows her support for others by choosing the independent brand.
With a necklace that is so obviously personal, the Duchess of Cambridge may have been trying to express her individuality, Claire continued.
This is also not the first time Kate has worn a piece that featured personal initials.
She was given a charm bracelet from Camilla, Duchess of Cambridge which featured the letter ‘C’, for both of their names.
“Initial necklaces are increasingly popular because they are a way of expressing individuality,” the expert continued.
Also they can carry meaning for the wearer and potentially also a person who gifts the jewel.
“For example, Kate received a gold initial charm bracelet with a C, and her official monogram imprinted above it, as a gift from her mother in law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
“A variety of initial pendants can be found at well-loved jewellery brands including Annoushka, Edge of Ember, Missoma, Monica Vinader and Jennifer Meyer.”
Early life
Kate Middleton, or Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was born on 9 January 1982 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, England.
She was born to Michael and Carole Middleton, a former flight dispatcher and air hostess. The couple founded a party supplies company, Party Pieces, in 1987 – now estimated to be worth £30 million.
Kate has a younger sister Pippa Matthews, 34, and a younger brother James Middleton, 31.
Education
Kate and her family moved to Amman, Jordan, in 1984, where the future Duchess was educated at an English-speaking nursery school.
After moving back to Berkshire the family sent Kate to private school, St Andrews School. She went on to briefly study at Downe House before moving onto Marlborough College where she boarded.
For university the young Kate attended the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Here she was awarded an undergraduate MA (2:1 Hons) in history of art.
Relationship with Prince William
Kate met Prince William when they were both studying at St Andrews, and both living in St Salvator’s Hall. Famously, William reportedly took a fancy to Kate after she wore a see-through dress during a fashion show.
In 2003 the couple began dating and lived together during their second year of university.
The couple split in April 2007, however, in October they were back together.
Wedding
Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his late mother Princess Dianas engagement ring in October 2010. The couple were holidaying in Kenya at the time.
On 29 April 2011 they married at Westminster Abbey with a whopping 26 million watching the event live.
Kate wore an Alexander McQueen dress worth a reported £250,000 on the big day.
Kate assumed the title “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge” and also become the Duchess of Cambridge on the day.
