Wandsworth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – A new Multi-Use Games Area and play space has opened on Wandsworth’s Patmore Estate, offering residents and young people fresh opportunities for sport.

Face painting, arts and crafts, basketball sessions provided by a local coach from London Mambas Elite Basketball, and football sessions lead by community group FAST were among the many events held to commemorate the opening of the MUGA in Patmore Street.

The occasion honored not only the physical space’s metamorphosis but also its potential for youth involvement, community development, and long-term career and skill opportunities.

Aydin Dikerdem, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

“This new games area has been shaped by resident feedback and is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when we listen to our communities and work together to deliver real, lasting change. Our council home building programme is about investing in neighbourhoods and creating amenity space as well as much needed council homes.

We’re proud to see Patmore Estate leading the way in showing how thoughtful investment in public spaces can unlock potential in our young people and strengthen the fabric of our community.”

Many young people see sports as a springboard to confidence, broader life skills, and even careers. After playing basketball on the estate’s original court, one local resident has gone on to hone leadership, collaboration, and communication abilities that have led to job and mentoring opportunities.

As part of our Homes for Wandsworth strategy, the investment in the MUGA and play area represents a larger commitment to creating spaces where young people may flourish. One of London’s most ambitious council home construction initiatives is Homes for Wandsworth.

They are aware that a good life is built on a nice home. Every council home constructed puts a family off waiting lists and into safe, cozy rentals.

Wandsworth’s Year of Play, a year-long initiative aimed at making the borough the greatest location for kids to develop, explore, and experience the freedom of play, is enhanced by this new area. Under the direction of the council’s Play Strategy, the Year of Play seeks to establish high-quality, inclusive play activities in every neighborhood so that all kids can have life-enriching experiences near home.

What transport and accessibility options serve Patmore Estate?

A number of bus routes run close to the Patmore Estate, specifically stopping at Patmore Estate / Drury House. The main bus route in this area is route P5, which has accessible stops on nearby Ascalon Street and Linford Street.

Nearby rail and Underground stations are an adequate distance away that link the traveler with the wider transport network of London. Some stations within reasonable distance provide step-free access for persons with disabilities.

The majority of buses serving the area typically have low floors, wheelchair lifts or ramps, and kneeling features to assist a person with disabilities in boarding.

Bus stops and transit centers try to follow the guidelines of the Equality Act and the Disability Discrimination Act in order to ensure accessibility for persons with mobilization experience challenges.
