Palestinian man shot dead by Israeli army in the occupied West Bank

JERUSALEM (Parliament Politics Magazine) – According to WAFA, the official Palestinian news agency and a nearby hospital, a Palestinian man was killed by the Israeli forces in the northern part of the occupied West Bank in the Jenin city, following armed battles between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army during a dawn army assault.

According to Wissam Baker, the director of the Khalil Suleiman Governmental Hospital in Jenin, Muhammad Maher Marei, 25, was shot in the chest and brought in at around 5:00 am (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

Baker said that Marei’s heart was shot through, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The bullet was probably fired by a sniper with the intention of killing, according to Baker. In the recent raids on the Jenin Governorate, that was what they had come to expect; no raid went off without fatalities. Even those who were injured had severe wounds, he said.

The army raided Jenin, where at least two Palestinian men were detained.

Marei was shot for an unknown reason, while the Israeli army stated that one of its soldiers had been attacked which led to shooting.

The Israeli army reported that firing was heard in the vicinity and the IDF (army) fired at numerous individuals who threw explosive devices at them during the operation.

Nearly every day, the Israeli army conducts raid-and-arrest operations in the occupied West Bank, which frequently cause Palestinians to suffer injuries or lose their lives.

Overnight on Wednesday, the army detained about 13 Palestinians from various locations in the occupied West Bank

Over the previous few months, Israeli soldiers have increased their operations on Jenin, where various armed Palestinian factions are operating, particularly in the city’s refugee camp.

According to Al Jazeera’s Walid al-Omary, around one-third of the Palestinians slain in the West Bank since the beginning of the year are from Jenin. That showed the [Israeli army] was concentrating its efforts in the Jenin region. It was evident that the decision had been made to continue these activities in the early morning, which was what had been happening for almost the previous three months.

Israeli troops have killed over 60 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank so far this year, while Palestinian attackers have killed at least 19 Israelis since March.

Shireen Abu Akleh, an Al Jazeera reporter who was documenting an Israeli army raid on Jenin on May 11, was fatally shot by Israeli forces, drawing condemnation from both domestic and foreign authorities.
