Delayed flights

The guidelines apply to all of the 27 member states, along with Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and a few additional areas such as the Canary Islands. The EU started expanding EU261 to include connecting flights in the US bought as a component of a separate original ticket from a European carrier, thus certain domestic flights may also be eligible.

EU261 mandates airlines to give meals, drinks, and two complimentary phone calls, emails, or faxes to passengers who suffer from any of the ones that follow:

  • A two-hour delay for aircraft up to 1,500 kilometers
  • A three-hour delay for intra-EU flights longer than 1,500 kilometers as well as other flights within 1,500 and 3,000 kilometers.
  • All other flights will be delayed for four hours or more.

Once your trip is postponed for much more than 3 hours, you are eligible for financial compensation based on the duration of the plane ride:

  • 250 euros ($251) for flights of 1,500 kilometers or less
  • 400 euros ($402) for intra-EU airline flights of more than 1,500 kilometers; and other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 kilometers.
  • 600 euros ($602) for flights over 3,500 kilometers

Travelers are not eligible for financial compensation if their flight was delayed attributable to unusual circumstances such as political unrest, severe bad weather, or flight depart safety concerns. Striking and other technological concerns are not considered unusual circumstances.

How to claim?

If you arrived at your final destination on arrival time but were denied boarding due to an oversold aircraft, you are eligible for the same benefits that cancellations provide. You’re also permitted drinks, meals, phone calls, and, if needed, hotel stays and airline transport. The EU advises travelers to make a complaint with the airline on which they traveled or to use the EU passenger air rights form.
