Lambeth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – A pedestrian has died after being struck by a police van on Lambeth Palace Road, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of the fatal crash.
Around 6.30 p.m. on October 2, the crash occurred on Lambeth Palace Road, close to Westminster Bridge.
The man passed away after being admitted to the hospital with severe injuries.
The Met Police contacted the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who dispatched investigators to the scene.
An investigation into the incident’s circumstances has been started.
The man’s family has been contacted by the IOPC, which promised to keep them informed.
IOPC director Emily Barry said:
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family, friends, and all those affected by his death.
It’s important we establish all the circumstances surrounding this incident and we are in the very early stages.
The collision happened on a busy road in London in the early evening when people are likely to have been travelling.
We would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward and report what they saw.”
What is the Independent Office for Police Conduct investigating specifically?
To ascertain the full facts of the incident, including the attending police van’s movements and question if there was any wrongdoing or negligence. To establish if police policies and procedures were followed.
Obtaining evidence such as witness statements, CCTV, and forensic examination. To determine if there was any issue of a criminal or disciplinary nature arising from the actions of the relevant police officers involved.
To provide transparency and accountability in this incident, which involves serious injury and loss of life as a result of police contact.
The IOPC is totally independent of police and government and oversees serious incidents involving police forces in England and Wales, particularly when there is a death or serious injury related to the police.
