At 6:57 a.m. today (October 18), the London Fire Brigade received the first of 18 calls regarding the Hackney Road fire.
The event affected three stories of a six-story apartment building, with emergency personnel concentrating their efforts on the third, fourth, and fifth floors.
A brigade official said the building suffered “significant damage” from the flames.
Images taken at the scene showed that the outside of the damaged storeys was charred, and the bricks surrounding the windows were blackened by the fire.
Firefighters had to rescue four people and a dog.
Eight fire engines’ worth of equipment were employed, along with a turntable ladder.
By 8:09 a.m., the fire was contained, however its source was still unknown.
Was the suspected e-bike battery cause officially confirmed?
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has confirmed that the cause of the fire in a Bethnal Green flat was, after an investigation, the most likely failure of a lithium-ion battery pack used with an electric bike or e-scooter, supporting the developing trend of fires in London linked to faulty or incorrectly charged lithium-ion batteries in electric bikes and scooters.
The LFB raised the alarm on the increase in incidents of this nature that have caused devastating impact on property and injury and loss of life.
Authorities continue to seek to alert residents and the gig economy to the risks associated with the battery packs while emergency services are assisting the local community who have been affected.
