A No 10 spokesman stated:

“The Prime Minister talked to President-elect Donald Trump this evening to congratulate him on his historic victory. The Prime Minister offered his hearty congratulations and said he looked forward to working closely with President-elect Trump across all areas of the special relationship.

“From defence and security to development and prosperity, the connection between the UK and the US was incredibly powerful and would continue to thrive for many years to come, the leaders consented.”

Moreover, the No 10 spokesman said: “The Prime Minister also recalled the situation in the Middle East and underscored the significance of regional stability. The leaders fondly recalled their engagement in September, and President-elect Trump’s close connections and relationship to the United Kingdom, and looked forward to working with one another.”

Why is David Lammy staying as foreign secretary despite controversy?

In September, Sir Keir had met with Trump in an try to build connections as the Government drew up strategies for his possible return to the White House. On Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s press secretary expressed David Lammy would remain as Foreign Secretary until the next election despite earlier calling Trump a “woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath”.

It came after Mr Khan, the Mayor of London, expressed the capital would

“always be pro-women, pro-diversity, pro-climate and pro-human rights”.
