Lewisham (Parliament Politics Magazine) – A Lewisham single mum has inspired a new Mother’s Day campaign, urging people to support and uplift single mothers on this special day.

The Hour To Give campaign, spearheaded by the south London charity MammaKind, invites people to donate an hour of their time to support local single mothers.

This may be making breakfast, helping their kids create a card, or just turning up with flowers and encouraging words.

The narrative of Tasha Amato, a Lewisham stroke survivor and single mother, served as the inspiration for the campaign.

Tasha said:

“Being a single mum means doing both jobs – mum and dad – and while it’s special, it’s also full-on.

Since my stroke, I can’t work or teach Zumba like I used to, but I’m so committed to being the best mum I can to Archie.

I’m lucky to have my sister Emma, but if it wasn’t for her, Mother’s Day would just be another day. This campaign will really make a difference for mums like me.”

At the age of 35, Tasha suffered a stroke in 2022 that left her unable to walk, speak, or take care of her small son Archie by herself.

She has regained her independence following months of rigorous rehabilitation, but she still encounters obstacles.

She is currently advocating for other single mothers in South London and worldwide by harnessing her strength.

After research revealed that 36% of single mothers just want to be informed they are appreciated on Mother’s Day, and 45% of them receive less than an hour to themselves each day, MammaKind, which operates a baby bank for families in need, launched the Hour To Give campaign.

Anyone who has a single mother in their life—whether they are a neighbor, coworker, or family friend—is encouraged by the effort to do one kind deed this Mothering Sunday.

Already supporting the initiative with food and flowers are local companies including The Blackheath House and Gail’s Bakery Blackheath.

Kirsty Lowe, co-founder of MammaKind, said:

“Whether it’s rustling up some eggs on toast or simply telling a single mum she’s appreciated – it matters.

Tasha’s story captures the heart of what we’re trying to do.

We want to make sure no single mum is left out this Mother’s Day – not just this year, but every year.”

MammaKind has helped over 8,000 family members since 2020; the majority of its clients are single mothers with children under five.

Tasha is an example of how strength can take many different forms, and on Mother’s Day, she is using hers to encourage South London to support the mothers who are most in need.

Participate by giving an hour of your time on Sunday or by using the hashtag #HourToGive to show your support online.

What are the key highlights about the movement?

Lewisham’s “MammaKind” has been actively planning activities to support moms, particularly those who are single. Mothers can meet, share their experiences, and create networks of support at these events.

London is hosting a number of Mother’s Day events, such as conferences, afternoon teas, and exercise sessions. To promote a feeling of camaraderie among mothers in Lewisham, the Mummas Together Group arranges frequent gatherings.

In addition to addressing issues like financial strain and social isolation, the movement seeks to praise the accomplishments of single mothers and emphasizes their tenacity.

This effort demonstrates a rising emphasis on assisting mothers across varied cultures and is in line with previous events such as the Black Maternal Health Conference UK 2025, which focuses on maternal health and well-being.
